   The Islands

Isle of Palms and Sullivan's Island are barrier islands. They are bounded on the southeast by the Atlantic Ocean with beautiful broad beaches and on the northwest by tidal marshes and the Intracoastal Waterway with deep water for boating. Sullivan's Island is an older, established residential and vacation community. Folly Beach is a barrier island situated to the south of James Island. It is separated from James Island by the Folly River and its southeast side fronts the Atlantic Ocean. Kiawah Island and Seabrook Island make up the West Islands. Kiawah Island is a 10,000 acre private residential resort community, south of Johns Island. Seabrook Island is also a private resort development located next to Kiawah. Seabrook Island is unique in that it is totally private and completely owned by its residents. Access to the island is controlled by a security gate to provide privacy for residents and guests.

  West Ashley

The city limits of Charleston extend across the Ashley River to an area known to locals as West Ashley. In fact, it is the place where the English colonists established the first permanent settlement in the Carolinas in 1670 along the banks of the Ashley River. Today the place where the settlers first stepped ashore, Charles Towne Landing State Historic Site, is among South Carolina's most outstanding natural and historic parks, with 663-acres that feature a reproduction 17th century sailing vessel, natural habitat zoo and beautiful Lowcountry vistas. It is also a favorite play and picnic spot for families from across the Charleston area.
